It Can Be Difficult to Have an Eternal Perspective

By Lance Blake, Elders Quorum President

Willy Frost

"It can be difficult to have an eternal perspective. The day to day tasks, troubles and even accomplishments that we experience daily can cause us to forget that a loving Father has a remarkable plan for us. These distractions are part of our mortal experience, but if we let them become more important than loving the Lord, loving our neighbors, and keeping our covenants, it can become very easy to completely lose sight of what matters most. The turmoil of the world today creates distractions and clouds of uncertainty. With these dark clouds distracting us, how are we supposed to keep that eternal perspective and keep our hearts and minds focused on the things that matter most?

After a couple of challenging weeks where I have been very distracted by everything from work emergencies to illness to yard work, I received hope when reading Isaiah chapter 60, part of our reading this week from “Come Follow Me.” Verse 2 says, “ For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.”

As we serve the Lord, as we go about his business, we bring the Savior’s light to the world around us. As we reach out to others in kindness, as we serve, as we share our talents and resources, we become that light and that beacon. I am grateful to all those who fulfill their covenants, who give their time, talents, and energy for the service of others, and those who love unconditionally, because they are the light that helps me see through the uncertain fogs and mists of my everyday mortal life and see the beautiful perspective of eternity. I encourage all of us to continue to work to be that light, and as we do, His glory will be seen upon each of us."
